After talking about the European tradition of illuminating and illustrating the handwritten pages found in books throughout the Middle Ages, these 8th grade artists created these Illuminated Manuscript pages.  They ruled out (measured out) the lines for their text and the spaces for their initials (the large letter that begins the page), they wrote their text with calligraphy or felt tip pens, and they used a variety of different media (pen, pencil, colored pencil, soft pastel, calligraphy ink, charcoal, marker, string; or silver, bronze, copper, or gold foil) to create all of the imagery and decorations on their pages.  Most of the artists used their own original poetry for the text.  Scroll down to see their work.
