Scroll down to see the wide variety of ceramic pieces created by the artists in 7th grade using the slab technique. With these pieces, they thought about how ceramic art can be functional - how it can be used for a certain practical purpose. These artists then sketched ideas for their forms, rolled out slabs of white earthenware clay, cut out all of the pieces for their forms, and scored and slipped all of those pieces to assemble their forms. After their pieces were fired in the kiln the first time (the bisque firing), these artists applied a glaze to give their forms color, to make them nonporous (so they could hold a liquid), and to make them stronger.
