Ancient Greek Sgraffito Forms

After building their forms with the coil technique, these artists painted on a layer of black engobe and then scratched in a design (sgraffito) to reveal the red clay underneath. When the pieces were bone dry, they were fired in a kiln at cone 05 (about 1888º F). Then the artists applied a coat of Clear Transparent glaze before firing the pieces again to cone 05.
