Ancient Greek Sgraffito Forms

Scroll down to see the Ancient Greek forms created by these artists using red earthenware clay. After building their forms with the coil technique, these artists painted on a layer of black engobe and then scratched in a design (sgraffito) to reveal the red clay underneath. When the pieces were bone dry, they were fired in a kiln at cone 05 (about 1888º F). Then the artists applied a coat of Clear Transparent glaze before firing the pieces again to cone 05.
