These artists looked at examples of chronophotography created by Etienne-Jules Marey and Eadweard Muybridge, and examples of abstract paintings created by a group called the Futurists, including Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla, and Natalia Goncharova. After discussing the idea a creating visual movement in a painting that does not actually move, these young artists brainstormed ideas for the subjects that they might paint. They then developed their compositions while thinking about how they could create visual movement and how they could abstract their subject matter.
